Capsule Endoscopy FAQ
Preparing for Capsule Endoscopy

The Given® Diagnostic System featuring the M2A capsule is the newest technological advancement approved by the FDA to diagnose diseases of the small intestine. It is the only non-invasive method for direct visualization of the entire small intestine.

For Capsule Endoscopy, the patient swallows a capsule, the size of a large vitamin, which contains a miniature disposable camera. The camera capsule moves smoothly and painlessly through the digestive tract. Over an eight-hour period, the camera transmits over 55,000 images to a small receiver worn on the patient's waist. This technology enables physicians to view the entire small intestine surface that was only previously available through surgery or invasive tests.

Camera Capsule Endoscopy can be utilized to diagnose a range of diseases including:
  • Crohns Disease
  • Obscure gastrointestinal bleeding
  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome
  • Celiac disease and other Malabsorption Disorders
  • Benign and Malignant Tumors
  • Vascular Disorders
  • Medication-Related Small Bowel Disorders
  • Iron Deficiency Anemia
Capsule Endoscopy is performed at University MRI's North, West and JFK locations.
