Preparing for a Nuclear Medicine Exam


Nuclear Medicine Preparations


Note: For all Nuclear studies...
  • Please contact the center if you are diabetic, pregnant or nursing.
  • Some Nuclear Medicine exams may require a second or third return. You will be notified of this at the time of scheduling an appointment.
Hepatobiliary Scan and Hepatobiliary Scan with CCL:
  • No food or drink 6 hours prior to exam. Exam may take up to 2 hours.
Gastric Emptying Study:
  • Do not eat or drink anything for four hours prior to your procedure, and do not take any medication the day of your exam.
  • Please let us know right away if you are allergic to eggs or oatmeal.
Thyroid Uptake and Scan:
  • To prepare for your procedure, you should not have any shellfish or heavy salt for 24 hours prior, and you must be off synthroid medication for four weeks prior to your procedure.
  • If you are taking PTU or methimazole you will need to be off these medications for 3-4 days prior to your procedure.
  • Following your arrival, you will receive a capsule to swallow and then return six hours later for imaging.
  • After imaging, you will need to return the next day at the same time you swallowed the capsule, for final imaging.
  • Please call and notify us if you have ever had any thyroid surgery, or an IVP or CT with contrast within the past 4 weeks.
I 131 Whole Body Scan:
  • To prepare for your procedure, you should be off synthroid medication for four weeks prior to your procedure.
  • If you are taking PTU or methimazole you will need to be off these medications for 3-4 days prior to your procedure.
  • This is a multipart exam. On the day of your arrival, you will be given a capsule to swallow, and then return 3 days later to be scanned.
  • Please call and notify us if you have ever had any thyroid surgery, or an IVP or CT with contrast within the past 4 weeks.
I 131 Therapy (I 131 RIA Ablation)
  • No multi-vitamins for 2 weeks prior to exam.
  • No shellfish or heavy salt 24 hours prior to exam.
  • You must be off any thyroid medications 4 weeks prior to exam.
  • You must not have had an X-ray IVP or Cat Scan (CT) with contrast within 4 weeks prior to exam.
  • Please contact the center if you have had any previous thyroid surgery.
  • For 3 days after therapy, you must prevent contact with someone who is pregnant.
Nuclear Medicine Cardiac Stress Test :

Nuclear Studies not mentioned:
  • No preparation is required.

Note: It is beneficial to increase your fluid intake after the examination to help eliminate any radioactive material that may still remain in your system.
